We must reach an agreement on the July Charter: Chief Advisor

Desk Report:

Regarding the July Charter, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, ‘There is no way out of here. There is no way out of the path of compromise that we have started. We have to come to this compromise. I may be saying it loudly, but there is no way to throw it away. As a nation, the opportunity for our new journey was given by the uprising of the students and the people, the only solution to that is to go through the path of compromise and create a new Bangladesh. We can give various arguments. There is no end to arguments. But we have to stay on the path of solution. Many people may feel pain, but I accept it even if it is painful. But later you will get peace, the country will get peace. Because, the peace of the country is great peace.’

He said these things on the second day of the third phase of the dialogue of the National Consensus Commission with political parties on the implementation of the July Charter at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital today, Sunday.

The Chief Advisor said that he heard the statements given by politicians at the meeting of the Consensus Commission on television. At the same time, he informed about the process of forming the National Consensus Commission.

The Chief Advisor said, ‘At first, I was not sure what I would get from this. In which direction it will go, it will collapse at the beginning of the speech, no one will be seen – it will be like this. This new effort is not something taken out of a book. I tried it as a method of solving the problem taking into account the current situation. I have emerged after covering a long path. I am preparing for the future by taking decisions.’

The Chief Advisor believes that the Consensus Commission will be an example for the world.

Dr. Yunus said, ‘This should not be a flawed example, this is my appeal. The whole world will see such an example and try to follow it. Because, you have done the main work, there is only a short road left. Everything depends on the last part.’

The Chief Advisor said to the politicians, ‘You have covered a long way. You will create an example for the world by completing the remaining road beautifully. The problem we are trying to overcome is not only ours, it started two days ago in Nepal, it will be a problem for many people. It happened in the past, it will happen in the future too. So everyone will look at our solution carefully.’

Reiterating the election in the first half of February, Dr. Yunus said, ‘The election will be a festival election. If we can resolve these issues, then it will be a festival and a real rebirth of the nation. This is not just an election, it is a rebirth. So much sacrifice, blood and self-sacrifice will be worthwhile, if we can achieve rebirth.’

Commenting that the mass uprising of the students and the public has ‘created the monster of Aladdin’s lamp’, Dr. Yunus said, ‘What will we ask from him? Will we ask him for a cup of tea? Or will we want to change the world. This is in our hands. Without leaving any issue small, we will create this nation in a completely different way. This opportunity has come. Let us not get caught up in small issues and lose sight of the main big thing. Go for the big thing. The way we started this nation, it will just rise from the top, there is no need for right and left. Do that part.’

Regarding the need for reform, the chief advisor said, ‘Closing all the avenues for tyranny, so that tyranny cannot come from any direction. We know the rest. To stop tyranny, everyone has to agree. There is no room for disagreement. We cannot finish it if we disagree. No matter how much we give points, but we need great unity. We have to decide what we want. The giant will decide how to do it. There will be no difficulty. We will tell the experts, do it. We can move forward on that path.’

Dr. Yunus said, ‘We will give that giant the big job. Which he will never get the chance to ask for again. We are getting this giant only once. We will put the responsibility of fulfilling all the hopes in our minds on his shoulders. We want to go in that direction.

‘We should not have to enter the elections with any worries inside. The festival will start from here. The elections will be held in the first half of February. This is the way. We have built the highway. We will go this way. Our request is to close all the roads so that (autocrats) cannot enter through any place. If we can complete the work by February, our country will be secure and other countries of the world will come to learn from us.’

Requesting the Consensus Commission to complete its work well, the Chief Advisor said, ‘This work should be perfect and flawless. We will do it in such a way that a new nation will be born from it. You have created the maternity ward of the new nation.’

Presided over by the Vice-Chairman of the Commission, Professor Ali Riaz, and moderated by the Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor (National Consensus Commission) Monir Haider, Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul, BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, among others, spoke.
